A You by Any Other Name Might Be Quite Different
Shakespeare once posed a question that's often taken as a statement of fact these days. He asked whether a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. At the time, this was a question that one make take as common sense. But there's good reason why modern times are quite a bit different than in the distant past. Progress has in many ways come about by examining common wisdom and discovering what truths it actually holds. And what people have found is that it's quite possible that a rose by another name might not smell as sweet. Perception and initial impressions go a long way into how people form their opinions. And names have a way of priming people to expect some traits. Anyone who's spent much time socializing can attest to the fact that people will usually read new evidence into presupposed opinions rather than altering them. If someone is assumed nice from the start, than nice traits will be noted while the opposite is discarded. And the same goes for any other personality as well. And in fact, people even do that with their own personality. People will often adapt their behaviors to meet expectations which arise from social class or presentation. And of course, all of these are true of names as well.
Names aren't simply about how people perceive each other. A name also factors into one's self perception. Most people will benefit from asking a simple question. And that question is, what does my name mean? The answer will take many pages to fully explain. But that explanation will inform every aspect of one's life. It will show how one has been unconsciously pushing themselves and being pushed by those around them. It can inform people about their strengths, and show them aspects of life which need further attention. And above all it offers up the chance to learn more about oneself.
